The Index
A system of selective judgment.
The Index is the LGC discipline for moving from a broad field of information to a measured threshold for action.
The arc
Information narrows before conviction grows.
Four arcs carry a question from an open field to a defensible commitment. Each one resolves part of what is unknown, and nothing advances on interest alone.
Method
Seven movements, in order.
Each movement states what must be established before the next becomes meaningful. The ledger is read downward, and no line is skipped for convenience.
- 01
Identify the decisive variable
Define the condition that changes the decision rather than cataloging every available fact.
- 02
Establish the evidence
Trace claims to sources, distinguish observation from inference, and expose missing information.
- 03
Calibrate downside and constraints
Model failure conditions, liquidity limits, operating friction, and irreversible commitments.
- 04
Align participants and capital
Make responsibilities, incentives, economics, and decision rights explicit.
- 05
Define the decision threshold
Set the evidence, price, timing, and execution conditions required to advance.
- 06
Advance with measured conviction
Commit in proportion to what is known, preserve options where uncertainty remains, and sequence execution.
- 07
Review outcomes and update judgment
Compare results with the original thesis, document variance, and revise the operating view.
Applied
The same discipline, three fields of work.
The Index does not change shape by sector. What changes is the variable it has to isolate before a decision can be defended.
Healthcare
Where evidence and execution must remain connected.
- The strength of the evidence behind a clinical claim.
- The operating capability required to deliver it.
- The measurement that keeps outcomes visible over time.
Real estate
Where basis, structure and long-term use decide the outcome.
- The basis at which a position becomes durable.
- The structure that governs risk, control and reversibility.
- The long-term use that supports value beyond the entry.
Growth initiatives
Where operating capability determines whether a plan survives contact.
- The capability a plan quietly assumes it already has.
- The sequence in which commitments become irreversible.
- The conditions under which the plan should be revised.
Decision threshold
Conviction has a condition.
The threshold defines the evidence, structure, price, timing and execution conditions required to advance.
Stated before the decision, the threshold is what separates a considered commitment from an agreeable one.
